Secondary School

Welcome to Secondary School! Here, we foster a dynamic yet stable learning environment, where students grow to become articulate, confident, grounded, and compassionate individuals.

We have always interpreted education broadly, viewing learning as both a process and an outcome. We continue to cultivate the development of our core values and soft skills, as well as knowledge and understanding.

Within our subjects, we focus on experiential and collaborative work combined with the latest technologies, as we appreciate their importance in delivering high-quality learning. We build links with our community by having students learn beyond the classroom and inviting local and international guest speakers into our classrooms.

Secondary School is from Grades 6-12. We are authorised to offer the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme and the Diploma Programme. In addition, IAA follows the National Standards of Jordan for Arabic Language, Social Studies and Religion

Offering both the MYP and DP means that our graduates are better placed to fulfil their potential and make a meaningful contribution to a fast-changing and complex world.

IB Middle Years Programme

The Middle Years Programme (MYP) of the International Baccalaureate (IB) is offered in Grades 6-10 at IAA. Its philosophy places the students at the centre of the educational process. It seeks to enable its learners to have a realistic view of the world and to thoughtfully assess the merits of conflicting viewpoints.

The programme builds on the solid foundation provided by IAA’s Primary Programme and has been specifically chosen to synthesise best-practice and standards in order to prepare students for the Diploma.

The MYP is a holistic, inquiry-based curriculum framework that not only addresses the broad academic needs of adolescents, but also their emotional and social needs - especially, in terms of developing them as citizens of the world and leaders of tomorrow.

The focus of the MYP at IAA is developing international perspectives, by combining a solid curriculum with the diverse backgrounds and experiences of our students. The methodology used is student-centred, with teachers utilising a variety of teaching strategies designed to cater to the different learning styles and interests of our students. Whilst subjects are discretely taught, there is an integration between the subjects.

Students are assessed using published criteria and a variety of assessment tasks including essays, case studies, presentations, projects, and practical work.

Community Project

The Community Project gives Grade 8 students the opportunity to develop awareness of needs in various communities and to address those needs through service learning.

Personal Project

A culminating experience in which Grade 10 students apply their approaches to learning skills to complete an extended, self-directed piece of work.

Service as Action

Students engage in experiential opportunities and apply what they learn in the classroom by working on service projects within their multiple communities (local, national, regional and international).

eAssessments

At the culmination of the MYP, students in Grade 10 take the IB MYP eAssessment on-screen exams in Mathematics, Arabic: Language and Literature, Arabic: Language Acquisition, English:Language and Literature, and Interdisciplinary Learning. The eAssessment exams focus on real-world applications of knowledge, critical-thinking, and problem-solving skills across various subjects. The MYP eAssessments prepare students for future academic and technical challenges and personal growth.

16+ Programmes (Grade 11-12)

At IAA, students in Grades 11 and 12 are able to earn the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma or take a number of IB courses. The IB Diploma is a prestigious International pre-University qualification that is recognized by universities and governments throughout the world.

At IAA, we are committed to continuous growth and providing students with the best opportunities for their future. As part of this mission, we are proud to announce that we are in the process of incorporating a third possible pathway for 16+ programmes that is the IB Career related programme (IBCP) into our curriculum.

Students and their families make the decision on which pathway is right for them based on their intended career vision as well as their achievements from the final year of MYP with the support of their teachers, the DP coordinator and the University counsellor.

The IB offers a programme of a broad and balanced curriculum comprising six academic subjects which are studied at Higher or Standard Level. These are assessed both through external examinations and internal assessments marked at the school level but moderated externally by the IB.

International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (DP)

IB Diploma

To be eligible for the IB Diploma, students must meet the below requirements:

-Choose one from each of the offered subjects under each subject group. Note that Group 6 is optional, if a student chooses not to pursue a Group 6 subject they can replace it with an option from Group 3 or Group 4.

-Minimum of three subjects at Higher level (HL) and the remaining subjects at Standard level (SL).

In addition, the six subjects chosen are studied concurrently and are complemented by three core components;

- The Extended Essay (An in-depth piece of research):

This is a 4,000 words essay intended to introduce students to the kind of independent research and writing skills expected by universities and is assessed externally.

- Theory of Knowledge (Critical Thinking course):

It is intended to stimulate critical reflection on knowledge in its many forms. It is assessed externally through an essay and an internal component moderated externally.

-Learning outcomes in Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS)

This aims to develop in students a greater awareness of themselves, concern for others, and the ability to work cooperatively with other people. Please Note all full Diploma and all Course students are required to complete CAS.

IB Courses

Students not pursuing the IB Diploma Programme can opt for IB Courses in 6 subjects, with taking two HL courses being preferable for university acceptances. Students taking IB courses do not complete the Extended Essay or take part in Theory of Knowledge classes. They do need to complete CAS as it is a requirement for all students at IAA.

College and Career Counselling

The IAA College Counselling Office provides comprehensive guidance to students throughout their educational and professional journeys. This support is designed to help students identify their talents and interests, explore diverse career options, and connect with institutions that align with their goals.

IAA’s college counselling programme begins as soon as students enter high school. General workshops are conducted to familiarise students with college standards and expectations. As students progress, the counselling approach becomes more tailored, with personalised one-on-one sessions to align subject choices with their intended majors and preferred study destinations.

During the Diploma Programme (DP) years, IAA counsellors remain actively involved, offering targeted advice on academic pathways and CV development that is customised to students’ chosen fields of study. The programme also encourages students to strengthen their applications through internships, summer programmes , and volunteer opportunities. Dedicated sessions on essay writing and interview preparation are provided to help students excel in competitive admissions processes.

IAA facilitates key standardised tests such as the PSAT, SAT, ISA, and Oxford entry exams, ensuring students have access to essential testing opportunities. IAA’s college fairs offer students invaluable exposure to a range of academic and career paths, connecting them with representatives from leading universities and industries worldwide.

Career Days hosted by IAA invite prominent companies and professionals to share their expertise, providing students with insights into evolving career landscapes and future opportunities.

The IAA College Counselling Office is committed to equipping students with the resources, guidance, and opportunities necessary to succeed in higher education and beyond.

Grade 10 students engage in two weeks of "Job Shadowing,” a programme which allows them to directly experience the local workplace first-hand, and typically within their chosen fields of interest. This is a valuable way to increase their awareness of different careers and increase community engagement.
